Years ago I met a man who was very public and vocal about his Christian faith. But the walk was decidedly not in line with the talk. Seeing how much my non-Christian coworkers despised him for his attitude and behavior began to open my eyes to a problem that I would see play out more and more as the years went on.
So many Christians in America are hated by the world for the wrong reasons!
“If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, and evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.”
1 Peter 4:14-16 NKJV
The more I’ve observed how Christians interact with the world around us, I’ve come to realize that we don’t seem to understand just how much damage we’re doing to the Gospel.
That’s why I created What Are Christians? I wanted to share the stories of people I knew who have been hurt by those who claim the name of Christ, to show the personal impact our actions can have… both the bad and the good.
More than anything, I want to see Christians in our culture repent of our misrepresentation of Jesus, and become as powerful a witness of the Gospel as the First Century Church. We can’t come up with solutions if we don’t realize there’s a problem.
How about you? What are your thoughts on the state of modern American Christianity? What do you think we’re doing wrong, and what are we getting right?
